Summary of

9.IFK 2014 in Aachen

The 9th International Fluid Power Conference took place from the 24th to the 26th March 2014 in Aachen with its motto:

„Modern Fluid Power 
Challenges, Responsibilities, Markets“




Renewable Energy, mobile applications as well as new applications were some of the topics. A further highlight was the integration of the 6th Workshop on Digital Fluid Power into the IFK, thereby making it accessible to a larger community.


146 presentations with four plenary lectures and several overview lectures were presented to an international audience with 700 participants from 30 countries. The fraction of non-European participants was 12%, especially people from the Far East were well represented (China 44%, Japan 19%, South Korea 10%)

On Monday morning participants with an academic background started the first workshop. Its focus was a new approach in simulation methodology and their implementation into component and system design.


 The opening of an exhibition that was shown simultaneously to the lectures took place on Monday evening. The exhibition area at the Eurogress was fully booked. Thirty eight exhibitors used the occasion to present and discuss new trends.

The official welcoming and start of the Colloquium was given by Prof. Schmitt (Dean of the Mechanical Engineering Faculty of RWTH) followed by Mr. Kienzle (CEO of fluid power association within VDMA). Both gave an overview concerning the current state of the fluid power branch and its performance.



Traditionally, the colloquium is followed by a social programme in the evening. The highlight being is the banquet in the historic coronation room of the town hall on Tuesday evening. In this context Dr. Frank Bauer, president of fluid power friends’ association, handed Dr. Davide Christofori the HP-Award.

Wednesdays conference ended with two overview lectures about current fluid power research activities in the USA (Prof. Stelson) and in China (Prof. Yang). The IFK came to an end with the laboratory party on Wednesday evening. There the participants came together to discuss the event in a relaxed atmosphere.
